Partly Facetious: Jaats ruled under Musharraf
"So would the one who ushered in real democracy stand up?"
"What's this in aid of?"
"Everyone, but everyone in this country reckons he or she is the real democrat. I just want to separate the real from the fake democrats."
"Why?"
"Well, the people of this country should be aware of who is the real democrat?"
"And my question remains, why?"
"Well, granted that even dictators like Musharraf claim that he brought in real democracy to Pakistan, no doubt referring to the local bodies elections during his time which are still pending in all the provinces since 2008 right but the fact that he got himself elected from an electoral college that was led by the likes of the Chaudhry Jaats..."
"But they too ruled with Musharraf."
"They ruled under Musharraf."
"And your point is that they would not have ruled under Nawaz Sharif had they remained loyal to Brothers Sharif?"
"Ah, good point. Anyway the Khanzadehs are different you know, they are true democrats..."
"Look as long as the party leader reckons people vote for all those he grants a ticket to, or in other words only he has the vote bank and no one else does decisions are unlikely to be taken democratically within the party."
"I see, so I go back to my earlier question: why do you want to separate the real from the fake democrats?"
"Because five years of a democratically elected, though certainly not democratically governed Pakistan has changed the voting patterns of our cities. And Nawaz Sharif and company may realize this to their own detriment in the next elections."
"Right, and need I add your Khan has once again accused whiter than white Dar of giving 40 crore rupees to his son who lives in Dubai. Dar in his defence claims that it was money he earned abroad as an accountant, though for the life of me I don't understand how our accountants appear to make money hundred if not thousands of times more than their counterparts in the West...."
"Only accountants affiliated with a political party that rules make that kind of money. But anyway what Dar needs to do is to explain why he has not changed this law which enables Pakistanis not to pay tax on their income earned abroad - he must do away with double taxation clause I say like the Americans..."
"Right, but Dar is simply not logical when his largesse to his own son is under fire. He made a rather inane comment that the Khan should explain how he supports his two sons in the UK, perhaps Dar sahib needs to understand hereditary wealth and look at the assets of the Khan's former wife and the mother of his children - around 100 million or was it billion pounds - assets that are indisputably hers which she spends not in Dubai but in the UK..."
"And then the matter of giving an affidavit to Musharraf that he laundered money for his boss, even if it is time bound and no action can be taken, is..."
"In senatorial politics as witnessed today there is money and there is laundering so leave it alone. And besides he is forgiven - perhaps not by the party but by the democrat Nawaz Sharif."
"I give up."
